I have worked for more than 25 years as a professional writer, editor, researcher, and proofreader, both as an independent freelancer and in full-time staff positions. Much of my freelance and staff experience has focused on creating marketing communications copy for companies in the technology services and software sector, but I also have six years of staff experience in the publishing industry as an editor, proofreader, researcher, and fact-checker for a leading travel publication.

Due to hundreds of freelance projects in this area, I have considerable experience editing documents created by corporate and student authors who are not native speakers of English. I have perfected copy for English-challenged authors from all regions of the globe, including Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South America, Australia, and Asia. Additionally, I have produced copy conforming to the requirements of a full range of styles; a partial list of style guides would include Associated Press, APA, Chicago/Turabian, CSE, Harvard, MLA, and AMA, in addition to numerous internal house styles.

For both native and non-native English speakers, I have edited articles for publication in professional journals, student papers, and dissertations and theses in a variety of fields, including education, medicine and dentistry, law, politics, economics, psychology, sociology, religion, and the humanities.

I can bring special expertise to documents in subject areas including marketing and business, arts and humanities, and the social sciences. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, and I have worked as an Economist for the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. I am comfortable editing copy dealing with law and public policy as well, having worked as a Session Copy Editor for the Office of Legislative Counsel of the Oregon Legislative Assembly during the 2009 regular legislative session.

Samples of my writing on a variety of topics can be viewed at http://www.claylord.com/writing_samples.html. Please contact me via email or through my website to obtain a free quote for your project.

Client Testimonials

"I am the author of two of the leading reference books on Brazilian popular music. In addition to his editing and proofreading assistance on the earlier academic press editions, Clay Lord’s help has proven invaluable in getting my books set up for publication in numerous digital e-book formats and print-on-demand (POD) editions, including conversions to PDF, EPUB, Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook."
C.M., Brazil

"Regarding revision 2 of the fellowship bio: Great comments from [you] which I have incorporated and really appreciate. If possible, I would appreciate overall perspectives as with the first draft. Need to keep it to one page so any suggestions on areas for consolidation will be appreciated."
