Acoustical considerations in planning and design of library facilities

Abstract

Public libraries have a number of acoustical demands which are often not considered during the design and construction process. These issues can include noise intrusion from exterior and interior sources such as aircraft and building mechanical systems, excess reverberation in public spaces, speech communication, and intrusion from potentially non‐compliant uses, such as public meeting rooms. Recommendations are presented for the library professional to monitor attention to acoustical issues by the design professional, and to coordinate with architects during the design and construction of new or renovated library spaces.
