Abstract

Purpose

Describes reform of the induction training at tool and equipment manufacturer Hilti (GB) Ltd.

Design/methodology/approach

Explains the reasons for the changes, the form they have taken and the results they have achieved.

Findings

Reveals how the training now not only develops new starters' product knowledge, but also helps them to share the company's values and business goals.

Practical implications

Highlights the importance of making use of qualified trainers from within the company. Details the ways in which learning is reinforced with hands‐on exposure to products either in the field or with a learning mentor.

Social implications

Reinforces the importance of ensuring that in‐house training schemes are aligned with the prevailing attitudes towards training and development in society as a whole.

Originality/value

Stresses the need for constant adaptation in training and development.
