Innovation has become one of the top priorities for organizations that want to gain competitive advantage. The results of prior research indicate that knowledge management has a significant impact on organizational performance since it provides organizations with a highly effective framework for the implementation of their innovation strategies (Ciabuschi and Martin, 2012; Moustaghfir and Schiuma, 2013; Quintane et al., 2011; Rasmussen and Nielsen, 2011). Therefore knowledge management can be considered a key issue that enhances the innovation capability of organizations (Lee et al., 2013; Lin et al., 2012; Yang and Rui, 2009).

Successful knowledge management in organizations is based on three pillars: people, processes and technologies. Organizations rely on the knowledge, experience and skills of employees in the innovation creation process (Delgado-Verde et al., 2011). Besides, innovation processes are very dynamic and highly interactive, involving multiple participants within and outside the organization. Such an interactive environment must be supported by information technology (Massa and Testa, 2011; Shang et al., 2009). Nowadays the technologies of Web and Enterprise 2.0 (e.g. blogs, wikis, podcasts, video-casting, RSS feeds and social networks) are widely used to support and manage the flow of communication and collaboration between innovators and prospective users, in order to ensure the success of the innovation process (Barbaroux, 2012; Ribiere and Tuggle, 2010).

A preliminary literature review indicates that a research gap still exists in the area of the integrated research approach which would consider a combined impact of people, processes and technologies on innovations. In addition, a lack of empirical findings about the influence of knowledge management on the innovation capability of organizations is noted. Surveys and case studies on knowledge management as a driver of innovations in organizations, especially in post-transition countries and the public sector, are scarce. Moreover, knowledge management has been viewed through the perspective of different industries and different-sized organizations, but the intercultural perspective has not been researched extensively.

Authors are invited to submit papers that would contribute to fulfilling the following aims of the special issue:

  • to investigate and clarify the nature of the role of knowledge management in innovation through case studies;

  • to extend the empirical evidence about the impact of knowledge management on innovation;

  • to identify the drivers of knowledge management application in innovation;

  • to provide a showcase of case studies which discuss intriguing barriers and incentives to effective innovations and knowledge management in organizations from different countries, cultures, sectors (e.g. private vs public) and levels of development;

  • to motivate researchers to enhance theoretical frameworks and models of innovations driven by knowledge management;

  • to provide technical and business leaders with useful insight helping them to prioritize their knowledge management efforts in order to increase organizational performance and accelerate innovation.

Papers submitted to the special issue do not have to focus on the Baltic region.
