Abstract
A discussion of the political and economic status of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the light of the exodus of young and skilled people from the country in autumn 1989. National identity, possible reunification with West Germany, the present economic climate and the opportunities for trade are considered and the advantages and disadvantages described.
