Abstract

Examines the coming together of the three technologies of 3D Computer‐aided design, laser technology and additive techniques which has made rapid prototyping a reality for designers. Describes the various rapid prototyping techniques, giving their advantages and disadvantages, covering stereolithography, selective laser sintering [SLS], fused deposition modelling [FDM], solid ground curing and laminated object manufacturing [LOM]. Looks at the increasing accuracy of the models. Discusses the next generation of RP machines and how they will affect the design process. Concludes that the new techniques of rapid prototyping have become established in the design and product development worlds and are now making in‐roads into manufacturing.
