Abstract

Proclaims that many in the USA see the Single European Market as a unifying force that will obviate the need to manage people according to their country — others see Europe as irrevocably fragmented by cultural divisions, states both views are simplistic. Gives four forces of diversity: cultural factors; business structures; institutional influences; and the HR function. Records that factors, such as industrial relations and collective bargaining, have created a European‐wide trend towards more flexible employment terms.
