Amazingly, we have nearly reached the end of another year and thus the end of another volume of the Journal. We hope you will agree that it has been as enjoyable and interesting as previous years.
This final edition of the year begins with Singh et al. bringing a research paper for India entitled “Branding of Geographical Indications in India: A Paradigm to Sustain its Premium Value”. The paper identifies inherent deficiencies of the geographical indications (GIs) as protective brands adding to the premium value of the products as compared to the protection guaranteed to brands under the trademark route. Whereas the former protects the attributes of the goods the later adds to the brand equity of the goods. The paper attempts to find means to assign a strong visible identity that creates a premium visibility for GI to help them emerge as strong brands just like the brands envisaged for the trademarks.
Second, Finney, Finney and Parry bring us from the USA a research paper entitled “EEO/AA” and “Doing Good: An Exploratory Study”. Here, the authors empirically examined the relationship between students’ perceptions of equal employment opportunity/affirmative action (EEO/AA) ideals and their perceptions of companies’ ability to meet goals using their corporate social responsibility practices. They also examined the extent to which students’ support of EEO/AA relates to their community mindedness and attitudes toward volunteerism.
Third, Peter Yeoh from the UK talks about “Whistleblowing: Motivations, Corporate Self-Regulation, and the Law”. While employees need to be protected against unfair retaliations for making legitimate disclosure, it is argued, employers seek to prevent irreparable damage from abusive disclosure of sensitive corporate information. This paper investigates the motivation behind whistle-blowing, the tussle between internal and external whistle-blowing, and the extent whistle-blowing laws in the UK and the USA are able to provide protection to whistle-blowers.
Fourth, Md Awal Hossain Mollah talks about “Judicial Activism and Human Rights in Bangladesh: A Critique”. This paper attempts to evaluate the role of judicial activism as a golden mean approach of judiciary in protecting and promoting human rights from illegitimate interferences of government. With this aim, several case studies have been done on verdicts of higher judiciary in Bangladesh. This paper has particular interest in the light of recent events in Bangladesh.
Finally, Gisele Aruda writing from the UK offers “Global Governance, Health Systems and Oil & Gas Exploration”. Addressing this topic of increasing academic as well as professional interest, the article aims to explore the central risks, benefits and impacts of oil and gas exploration on human communities’ health and environment worldwide. It suggests a new model of governance to a more effective and coherent environmental management framework.
