The Middle Eastern region contains some of the fastest emerging economies of the world. The economic structures of the countries in this geographic region are such that some of the countries are dependent on the export of oil and oil-related products while others have a wider economic base in the sense that organizations other than oil and gas also substantially contribute to their overall growth. These organizations across the industry employ local labour as well as visiting expatriates in different roles and functions to achieve their goals and objectives. Furthermore, the organizations in the region have also been facing another important social challenge of realizing the national (nationalist?) aim of reserving a significant percentage of the jobs for the citizens of the country. As a result, there are altogether different kinds of challenges for the organizational think-tank to lead these diverse workforces effectively and also to leverage their capabilities for creating excellence at work. However, organizational decision-makers have been struggling to design sound organizational processes and practices to enable this leveraging process to take advantage of the capabilities of diverse workforces.

These situations have become more acute for management practitioners across organizations in the Middle East as there is little solid management research conducted in this part of the globe which aims to provide effective solutions to local problems. This situation calls for an urgent need to conduct a series of academic research inquiries in this region for the purpose of helping organizations to find local solutions to their emerging management and leadership concerns, rather than to rely upon the knowledge created for organizations in other parts of the world.

Therefore, this special issue has been consciously designed for academics, practising managers, and business leaders to contribute empirical as well as conceptual research papers to enlarge the existing knowledge base on organizations striving for leadership excellence in the Middle East. The special issue theme of the International Journal of Organizational Analysis (IJOA) will focus on ‘‘Leading for organizational excellence in the Middle East’’ and calls for research papers to broaden the existing knowledge base of creating leadership excellence at workplaces in the Middle East.

The special issue of the IJOA will provide a platform for academicians, research scholars, practising managers and students of management to develop and contribute research to create a geographically relevant knowledge base which can be utilized by organizations in the Middle East desiring to leverage their management and workforce capabilities. The following topics and themes are indicative only and contributors are encouraged to build their work from real-world situations around the broad scope of such topics as:

  • Leadership challenges in emerging economies

  • Leveraging human potential through leadership

  • Leading knowledge workers

  • Motivating people to embrace organizational change

  • Employee productivity across national culture

  • Leading learning organizations

  • Creativity and innovation in the workplace

  • Leadership and emotional intelligence

  • Leadership and corporate social responsibility

  • Designing organizations for sustainable growth

  • Leadership in organizations during turbulent times

  • Creating cultures that lead to organizational renewal

  • Leadership in high-performing startups

  • How leaders foster mind sharing in knowledge organizations

  • The bright and dark sides of transformational and transactional leadership.

This special issue encourages submissions of research papers which could be either empirical or conceptual but each should make an original contribution to the body of knowledge in the domain of organizational leadership. Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts utilizing multi-level approaches and focus on those organizational and social contexts which have received less attention so far but are nevertheless important to understand the dynamics of leadership of organizations in the Middle East.

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

All submitted research papers will be refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors, sample copies of previous articles, and other relevant information for submitting manuscripts are available on the Author Guidelines web page of IJOA or by clicking here: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/authors/writing/calls.htm
