MTE Turck introduces the Banner PVA (parts verification array), a simple-to-use light screen, well suited to many part assembly and detection applications (see Plate 10).

The PVA has two components: an emitter and a receiver. The receiver's solid state output easily interfaces to a system controller that is pre-programmed for a specific sequence of tasks. Mounted so that the beams go across each bin in an assembler's work station, the PVA then signals the assembler (by means of a highly visible job light), which of the bins contains the items to be picked and the order in which they should be collected.

As the operator reaches into each bin, the system senses if the correct part has been taken and, if so, signals the next bin in sequence. The system may be wired to signal an alarm for the operator and/or a supervisor should the wrong part be selected.

The light screens measure only 30mm wide by 15mm deep and are available in four lengths from 100mm to 375mm. Emitters and receivers have clearly visible indicator lights mounted on either side of the housing which can be remotely controlled to initiate user action with either a solid or flashing light. Two LEDs on each emitter and receiver ensure correct set up and indicate weak signal strength or system errors.

The range for all screens is up to 2m and they are supplied with a fixed cable or 4-pin Euro style quick-disconnect fitting. Operation is with 12v to 30v dc and the minimum resolution is 35mm for all models. There are easy DIP switch adjustments for light/dark operation, solid/flashing job light, A/B frequency and gate polarity for activating the job light indicator.

Major benefits of a PVA-driven system include simplified job training, increased quality control, reduced rework and inspections and overall an increase in efficiency. It speeds the resumption of work after breaks or other distractions and it is ideal for work areas where communication is difficult. Where picking levels are high, the system looks set to become an indispensable productivity tool.
