Comau, Fiat Group's automated production systems and machine tools divisions, is negotiating with French car maker Renault to acquire a majority share in Renault SA's wholly owned Renault Automation.

The two companies were expected to sign an agreement in spring 1999. Renault Automation specialises in the manufacture of machine tools and lines for automotive components and mechanical and final assembly systems for the automotive industry.

It has annual sales of around 200 billion Italian lire, 85 per cent of which is derived from business with its parent companies and the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group. The company employs around 800 people in France in plants at Evry, Castres and Meudon where there is a specialised engineering centre. In addition, Comau has acquired the car body and welding activities of Sciaky S.A.

Based in Paris, France with a workforce of 200 technicians, Sciaky has been present in assembly and welding systems for the auto industry since 1929.
