Modular Automation is introducing a new range of high-speed automated assembly and test systems aimed at high volume UK manufacturers following a partnership with leading US automation company Bodine Inc.

Following the success of Bodine's cam systems in North America, Modular Automation is to design and build its own range of high-performance cam-based machines, using the well proven Bodine system (see Plate 2).

This is good news for manufacturers seeking cost-effective alternatives for their high-volume manufacturing, according to Modular's technical director, Trevor Dixon: "We are always looking to expand our portfolio of automation services and our new cam-based assembly and test systems offer manufacturers an opportunity to improve their competitive position when high volume, cost-leadership and quality are vital for success".

Cam-based machines have always been popular for high-volume manufacturing, but usually at the penalty of reduced flexibility. The module Bodine system addresses this issue by using standard chassis units and workstations, which are easily reconfigured to accommodate product changes.

The machines can also accommodate as few as six or as many as 80 workstations and are ideally suited to markets ranging from electrical switches and relays to trigger pumps, door locks, pharmaceutical products and automotive components.

Adds Trevor: "Modular Automation has focused successfully on pneumatic actuation for its assembly systems, but by adding cam-based machines to our range we are able to satisfy the demands of high-volume manufacturers. To give manufacturers an indication of the potential of our new systems, we will be demonstrating an operational machine at our factory".
