Extremely compact AS-i mini-modules save 70 per cent space

Keywords Hirschmann Electronics, Automation

Hirschmann Electronics (formerly Richard Hirschmann) has developed two new AS-i mini-modules, compact and space-saving. Both modules are extremely robust and can, according to Hirschmann, be used in the harshest of industrial environments without any additional protection.

The active ASI mm mini-module (Plate 5) has four inputs, generates AS-i telegrams with an AS-i chip, and is suitable for space-sensitive applications such as robotics.

The passive ASI 2FTR coupling module is designed for AS-i actuator/sensor interfaces. The AUX auxiliary power supply connection uses AS-i flat cable or round cable. Compact applications will include motor starters and actuators.

With four M8 inputs, the ASI mm I/O 41 mini-module option makes it possible to connect miniature sensors closer to the process. An installation surface of just 46mm x 46mm is all that is needed. Up to 70 per cent of space is saved compared with conventional modules.

The mini-modules are particularly suitable for mounting on to movable machine parts – the flat cable is connected within the module, so that no additional coupling components are needed. Integrated LEDs display the status of the inputs, the AS-i buses and possible errors in peripheral devices.

Flat cable-coupling modules recently developed by Hirschmann for AS-i and AUX provide a transition from two flat cables to one round cable. Connection of the flat cable is carried out quickly and easily, without any tools, using an innovative penetration technology.

Other versions are available, including M12 connection and open line-end options. The mini-modules are designed for use in ambient temperatures between -25°C and +75°C.
