Protective coatings specialist Alocit International of Dereham, Norfolk, UK, has just completed the first part of its biggest ever contract to coat the concrete piles at Malaysia's international showpiece construction, the J.B. Waterfront City (JBC) at Johor Baru.

This £1.5 billion project at the end of the causeway linking Singapore to the mainland of Malaysia is a "floating" city covering some 118 acres when complete, and creating some 30,000 new jobs.

Built on concrete piles which are linked with beams and concrete decking, the new waterfront city will breath fresh life into the Johor Baru coastal region. The area is serviced by two super highways again built on piles along the Lido beach the initial project to enable work to start on the city itself. The first pile was started by Malaysian prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Alocit 28-15 was selected because of its 25-year success record for use on concrete and its ability to be applied on wet and salty surfaces. This was critical since the piles are coated from some 2m below the low water mark up to and encompassing the splash zone 3m above the high water mark, on each pile. Pilecon specified Alocit as part of a proactive maintenance measure to ensure the long-term life of the piles. Reinforced concrete in tropical climates with constant and intermittent contact with salt water will reputedly last only one third as long as similar concrete in cooler climes, if not protected. As a result, protective coating on concrete is fast becoming the norm in harsh tropical conditions.

By coating the piles with Alocit, a minimum maintenance free life of up to 20 years is believed to be assured and the risk of chlorine attack on the core reinforcing is averted. A further benefit claimed of Alocit is its ability to show any impact damage to the coating the first, primer coat is a light bright buff colour while the top coat is an environmentally aesthetic grey. Any impact damage to the grey exposes the bright primer which is easily seen and remedied.

The application of the Alocit started in May 1977 the programme calls for applications to the driven piles after the decking has been dropped into place on the connecting beams and will continue, according to the speed of piling, on and off for some two years.
