Calcium-modified zinc phosphate pretreatment

Calcium-modified zinc phosphate pretreatment

Keywords Chemetall, Coatings, Zinc phosphate

In the past, users of calcium-modified zinc phosphate pretreatments have found that as the bath ages the coating weights increase and become more variable. The addition of a separate accelerator was often found to exacerbate this problem.

To overcome these difficulties, Chemetall Ltd has developed a new calcium-modified zinc phosphate, Gardobond 4008, which operates with the same traditional parameters as previous products. The key features claimed of this new product are:

  • A coating weight which is consistent throughout the life of the bath.

  • No need for separate additions of accelerator during operation.

  • A phosphate solution that is easy to control and extremely versatile is not only suitable for pretreating ferrous surfaces prior to painting, but is also an excellent base for rubber to metal bonding and for use in cold forming.

Gardobond 4008 can also be used for processing galvanised steel and zinc-based die castings in mixed production with steel. This product has been successfully field-trialled and is now ready for release to industry.
