A design of invisible hinge the SOSS from NV Tools of Brentwood has been selected by Cannon Telecomms for use in its range of indoor and outdoor cabinets. It is claimed that, unlike other designs, the compact SOSS hinge does not interfere with the door seal, making it ideal for use on outdoor cabinets, and those sealed against electromagnetic interference (Plate 7).
A leading manufacturer of enclosures for communications applications, Cannon Telecomms range includes streetside and trackside cabinets for Telecomms equipment, cable TV services, CCTV, traffic management networks, and indoor cabinets for data network equipment. The SOSS hinges are used on outdoor and indoor enclosures which carry respectively, IP65 and IP55 ratings against ingress of dust, dirt and moisture, and on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) cabinets.

The combination of the concealed SOSS hinge and our own Nylon 6 support mouldings has helped us design cabinets which keep out dust, dirt and moisture even in the exceptionally harsh conditions of the roadside or trackside environments.
Designed to withstand harsh conditions, each hinge consists of two die-cast bodies made from zinc plated Mazak alloy, incorporating stainless steel links and pins. This construction provides strength, compactness and durability.
The hinge also allows the door to open a full 180 degrees, facilitating access by engineers to equipment housed inside the cabinet. When the doors are closed, the concealed hinge helps to protect the cabinets against vandalism.
Roy Radford again: "The cabinets we build have a life expectancy of 15 years and the performance of each component is critical to overall quality. We looked at a number of options before selecting the SOSS hinge for its compact design and compatibility with our door seal designs."
