Wedge Group Galvanizing's plant at South East Galvanizers Ltd has completed a major contract for treating structural steel that forms part of the entrance a long covered walkway through which thousands of visitors will pass on their way into the Millennium Dome at Greenwich.

South East Galvanizers shot blasted and hot dip galvanized hundreds of columns, tubes and piping for piazza canopies, like inverted umbrellas, over the walkway.

The assignment involved processing a total of 424 tonnes, equal to the weight of 40 fully loaded double-decker buses. Sizes vary in length from 5 to 9.5 metres. The six-month contract has been carried out on behalf of CNV Ltd, structural steel fabricators, of Feltham, Middlesex.

Lionel Bell, general manager at South East Galvanizers Ltd, commented: "We are proud to have been involved in such a prestige, once-every-thousand-years project. The hot dip galvanizing process forms a metallurgical bonded coating that can prolong life expectation by more than 25 years good for well into the next millennium in fact".
