Corrosion protection of battery enclosures and racks

Keywords Plascoat, Coatings, Thermoplastics

A new coating claiming major performance and environmental benefits over traditional materials used for the corrosion protection of battery enclosures and racks has been developed by European thermoplastic coatings company Plascoat.

According to Plascoat its PPA684 has been engineered to provide greater corrosion resistance to diluted battery acid and chemicals than polyethylenes currently being used in the sector. They also state that the Plascoat material overcomes the environmental concerns associated with the spraying of polyurethane and the chipping experienced with polyester coatings.

PPA684 is the latest product to emerge from the company's application-specific Performance Polymer Alloy development programme and is thought to offer a lower-priced alternative to its top-of-the-range PPA571 and a wider processing window than PPA662.

A powder-based system featuring a blend of polyolefins, PPA684 is said to require no primer when applied to cleaned metal, yet claims excellent and lasting adhesion.

High level impact and UV resistance, flexibility even in low temperatures and a pinhole-free finish suitable for overspraying for greater colour choice are features claimed of a coating that is said to offer a process time when dip coated of just four to seven minutes.

In Plascoat's opinion the reduction in process time, energy savings, lower material density, good thickness control and the absence of the need for a primer, together make PPA684 highly cost competitive.
