TWI has won a Vision 100 award for JoinIT, its knowledge management systemKeywords: TWI, Knowledge management, Awards

With 3,250 industrial member companies in 68 countries, keeping in touch with everyone is a formidable task. TWI therefore constructed an online knowledge database, allowing member companies to view the corporate knowledge gleaned from more than 50 years of trading.

We understand that this method of transferring important technical detail to a wide audience so impressed the judges of the BT-sponsored Vision 100 awards that TWI was selected from 2,700 companies as having the best approach to knowledge management. Sir Peter Bonfield, one of the judges, said "Vision 100 set out to stimulate the imagination of senior decision-makers and show how leading-edge communications solutions can address key business issues and transform the way we work." In judging TWI, another judge commented. "This company has complete clarity about the business it is in and how management can achieve the results it needs."

The JoinIT database is built of frequently asked questions on joining, knowledge summaries, best practice guides plus interactive "toolkits" giving practical answers to any problem in joining.

Furthermore, companies can elect to take the knowledge management system into their Intranet adding their own corporate knowledge to give a comprehensive reference library to all their engineers.

Since winning the award, TWI has been concentrating on making its knowledge database more widely available. It has redesigned its Web site, www.twi.co.uk, to include JoinIT and has made navigation easy and seamless. Visitors will be guided swiftly to their area of interest and will also be offered the opportunity to join TWI's increasing world-wide Industrial and Individual Membership to gain access to the full detail of JoinIT.
