Protecting chiller units from condensation at BP Coryton

Keywords: Corrosion prevention, Sealing, Densofil

A widely used production Winn and Coales extensive range of corrosion prevention and sealing materials is Densofil, a low temperature thermal insulation material (Plate 3).

The most recent application is at BP's Coryton refinery. Densofil has been applied to the flanges and valves on the cold pipework of the low temperature chiller units of the lubes dewaxing plant. The purpose is to stop moisture condensation on the flanges and valves, which could lead to long-term corrosion. Application was carried out by BP's approved national contractors, Deborah Services.

Densofil is a petroleum based compound containing beads of cellular polymer and flow control additives. It is in putty form for easy contouring around complex shapes such as valves, flanges, etc. and filling cracks and cavities in preformed insulation sections. It can be used to seal the space between insulated pipes and ducts for service entries. Winn and Coales add that Densofil will give continuous service at temperatures as low as −50°C and up to +60°C.
