The development of a car paint that meets stringent EU emission standards is just one example of how DuPont is leveraging its research and development expertise through a close partnership with Synpo, an independent research institute located in Pardubice, Czech Republic. This international collaboration involves DuPont Performance Coatings (DPC) for both finishes and ink and DuPont Surfaces for DuPont Corian, and five DuPont laboratories in the US and Europe. Synpo's efforts have led to the commercialisation of several DPC products and improved the fundamental understanding of coating systems. The successful DPC/Synpo car paint collaboration was in response to EU-initiated environmental laws reducing the content of VOCs permitted in car-repair paints. They developed a binder technology, based on star oligomers, that enabled them to formulate paint that meets these specifications. One of the specified oligomers required a raw material that could not be produced in DPC's reactors. Working with Synpo, it developed a process to produce this raw material and found a manufacturing site where both raw material and star oligomer could be produced. This helped it to fulfil the European solvent- emission requirements for car-repair topcoats and clear coats without any loss in the paint's overall properties.
