Peterborough-based East Anglian Galvanizing Ltd was the obvious choice when it came to galvanizing the steel balcony bases for the city's colorful new apartments development on Oundle Road, formerly the site of Marshall's garage (Plate 1).

The local company – part of Wedge Group, the UK's largest independent galvanizing business – has its plant right on the doorstep, on Warely Road. And the new apartments site is clearly visible from East Anglian Ltd's premises.

East Anglian Galvanizing Ltd was contracted by steel fabrication specialists Adey Steel Ltd, of Loughborough, Leicestershire, to galvanize the balcony sections, which in total weighed between 30 and 40ton.

The steel sections have been galvanized by the “hot dip” method, using molten zinc, in the company's galvanizing bath which measures 8×1.2×2.4m. The galvanizing process provides the ultimate anti- corrosion protection against the elements for 50 years or even longer.

The apartment development consists of 101 one- and two-bedroom units, and is being built by local construction firm Jelson Limited as part of a regeneration programme in this part of Peterborough, close to the city centre.

Selwyn Parrish, Commercial Manager of East Anglian Galvanizing Ltd, said: “Normally we don't have the chance to see where our work ends up being used, but in this case it's right next door to our site here on Wareley Road, and we can see the construction site from our yard.”

East Anglian Galvanizing Ltd has also recently successfully completed a contract to galvanize 312 steel balconies, weighing around 100ton, for a brand new luxury apartment development in the centre of Walton- on-Thames in Surrey.

The contract was awarded by steel fabrication specialists, Discain Project Services Ltd of Great Billing, Northampton, which East Anglian Galvanizing Ltd has worked with successfully on a number of contracts over several years.

As part of a facelift for the town centre, the Walton-on-Thames apartments are being constructed above a retail complex by major London construction firm, O & H Construction. This project is due for completion in October 2006.
