Summaries of abstracts from DARE (Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects)About DARE
Systematic reviews identify, appraise and synthesise research evidence and can provide reliable information about what is known and not known But just as is the case with individual studies, systematic reviews can be difficult to identify, can have methodological flaws and can be difficult to interpret.
DARE (Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects) saves time that might have been spent searching for reviews as staff at the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) systematically identify reviews from around the world. These reviews are then assessed for inclusion against pre-determined criteria. For reviews that meet the criteria, structured abstracts are prepared that describe the review, including the methods, results and conclusions, together with a critical commentary on the overall quality of the review.
The database contains over 4,000 abstracts of systematic reviews that have been quality-assessed and critically appraised on a broad range of health and social care related topics.
DARE is publicly available free of charge via the internet (www.york.ac.uk/inst/crd/crddatabases.htm). The database is updated every month and users can sign up to receive ‘email alerts’ about the latest content to be added.
