The need for microvia technologies has grown at a dramatic rate over the last few years. This has been driven initially by the high volume demands for mobile phone handsets worldwide, but what of other opportunities for this technology and how will other associated technologies develop? In the last two years alone, we have seen that laser technology has become the key dominant enabling technology to build-up boards. However, BPA can show that, due to unreliability and set up times, the actual time per hole achieved can be as much as six times the theoretical optimum promoted by the "Laser Lobby"!

At the same time, the rapid growth of the relatively small market demand for materials has meant that some Japanese board fabricators, such as Kyocera and Toppan Printing, have previously needed to develop their own photoimageable dielectrics. It is interesting to note that most of the development in materials and equipment to date has been aimed at the products for handheld devices. Outside this area, automotive technology is becoming a new arena.

BPA has looked at these issues in its recently completed study entitled "Build-up board technology 1999-2004 – portable applications and beyond". The study examines the way that build up boards have evolved and develops a revealing analysis and outlook for materials suppliers and board fabricators world-wide. The study examines the materials and processes both in current use and in future view and explores the possibilities for new markets throughout the world.
