(Nikkei) Elna Co. plans to invest nearly 1 billion yen to begin start-to-finish production of printed circuit boards in Malaysia in the spring of 2004.

The move will quintuple the company's monthly output in Malaysia. By handling all production process in Malaysia, where labour costs are cheap, the company hopes to cut its production costs by 10 per cent, and shorten average delivery time to 3 weeks, a reduction of 1 week.

In Malaysia, Elna will make printed circuit boards with four to six layers, used in digital home appliances, car navigation systems and other applications.

Production will be handled by Elna PCB (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a joint venture in Penang between Elna and two Taiwan-based partners. The company aims to sell the increased production through marketing arms in China, the US and the UK.
