Safe Internet Foundation partners with Safe America Foundation to create global Cyber Safety Network
The Safe Internet Foundation (SIF) and the Safe America Foundation have announced a new global initiative - the Cyber Safety Network - aimed at making the Internet reliable, safe and secure for all users. This announcement follows the launch of the Safe Internet Foundation in The Netherlands in November and in the UK in December, and is part of a major drive to establish the foundation and the Cyber Safety Network as the leading organisations educating Internet users worldwide about Internet safety issues.
Aims
Jan Baan, chairman of the Safe Internet Foundation, and Fred Siebert, chairman of the Safe America Foundation, have announced the joint Cyber Safety Network programme. The Cyber Safety Network highlights their goal to share common solutions and build a global approach to growing concerns over privacy issues, fraudulent payments, protection against viruses, and protection against unwanted information. Commenting on the announcement, Jan Baan said: "We are very pleased to co-operate with Safe America Foundation, not only because of its US expertise and the role of Silicon Valley in driving Internet development, but also as an important step in extending our European solution to common cyber concerns."
Fred Seibert, chairman of the Safe America Foundation, added: "We will partner with the Safe Internet Foundation in The Netherlands and the UK, and later in Germany and Spain, and we will support the foundation with their Internet safety awareness campaign". He added that his company - MTV Networks Online - has already donated $500,000 to develop a cyber safety campaign in the USA.
Cyber Safe Month
To support the aims of the Safe Internet Foundation and the Safe America Foundation, April will be designated a "Cyber Safe Month". During April a range of activities will be held in The Netherlands, the UK and the USA in order to attract attention to Internet safety issues.
Safe Internet Suite
Another part of the Safe Internet Foundation's activity programme is the launch of the Safe Internet Suite. The Safe Internet Suite combines products and services from founding members that can help promote safe Internet activities. The Safe Internet Suite will be available at the company's Web site at www.sif.nl
Safe Internet Hotline
The Safe Internet Foundation will also be launching a consumer hotline where Internet users can report their unsafe Internet experiences. This will be available from 1 February at the foundation's Web site - www.sif.nl - and will be supported by a chatroom on the Safe Internet Foundation Web site where Internet users can share their unsafe Internet experiences and pick-up tips on cyber safety.
Recruitment of new members
Since the official launch of the Safe Internet Foundation in The Netherlands, in November, the organisation has continued to recruit new members including Akzo Nobel, Pricewaterhouse Coopers and Percomad. The following enterprises are now Safe Internet Foundation members: Air Miles, Akzo Nobel, Aladdin Knowledge Systems, Bart Smit, ClickChoice Europe, Crypsys Data Security, Data Sortware Solutions, Percomad, Pink Elephant, Planet Internet and Pricewaterhouse Coopers. The Dutch government is also represented by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works and the Ministry of Education.
About the Safe America Foundation
The Safe America Foundation was formed in 1992 to reverse the rising numbers of infant fatalities in car crashes. Safe America has since diversified into other safety programmes to address lifelong injury prevention including cyber safety, teen-impaired driving, home safety, international travel and violence prevention. The Safe Internet Foundation aims to create an international platform of Internet suppliers who propagate a safe Internet. Its goal is to recruit 100 International members by the end of 2000. The original idea for the Safe Internet Foundation initiative comes from Jan Baan, who was keen to encourage the business world to develop safe Internet solutions. Working with the Internet Society Netherlands, the foundation will promote solutions that actively contribute to the realisation of a safe Internet.
