3 December 2004Landslide, Zuojiaying, Guizhou Province, China

A landslide has engulfed a village in southern China, leaving 65 people missing, state media reported. The landslide struck Zuojiaying, in mountainous Guizhou province, at about 03:00, local time (19:00, UTC, 2 December), Xinhua said. About 25 homes were hit as residents slept. More than 30 people escaped and the search for missing villagers is under way, the news agency said. One official said that experts and armed police had arrived at the scene to oversee the rescue effort. He ruled out the weather as a cause of the accident, saying it had been fine at the time when the collapse happened. The cause is to be investigated. One official said that the cause seemed to be natural. “There are a lot of steep hillsides,” he said.
