Paddy Power, self-described as Ireland’s largest bookmaker, is now taking bets on which volcano will be the next to erupt with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of three or greater.

Paddy Power said in a release, “It’s amazing what punters will bet on and this particular betting market had our odds compilers literally outside their comfort zone. Suffice to say it’s a lot easier to figure out the odds on a football match than on a volcano erupting, but definitely not as much fun!”. The Irish odds on the next volcano to erupt are:

  • 3:1 Mt Unzen (Japan).

  • 9:1 Mauna Loa (The USA).

  • 10:1 Ulawun (Papua New Guinea); Merapi (Indonesia); Santorini (Greece).

  • 11:1 Colima (Mexico); Rainier (The USA); Taal (Philippines); Teide (Canary Islands).

  • 12:1 Mt Nyiragongo (Congo); Popocatepetl (Mexico).

  • 14:1 Sakurajima (Japan).

  • 16:1 Stromboli (Italy).

  • 22:1 Avachinsky (Russia); Galeras (Colombia).

  • 28:1 Mt Vesuvius (Italy); Chaiten (Chile); Etna (Italy).

  • 33:1 Santa Maria: Santiaguito (Guatemala); Yellowstone (The USA).

The prices, like the volcanoes, may still erupt. The most recent example of a volcanic eruption with a VEI of three was Mount Etna in 2002-2003. The eruption threw up a column of ash that fell to earth again as far away as 600 km (360 miles) from the mountain.
