Abstract

The Hotel and Catering Industry in Great Britain employs some 1½ million people according to varying estimates, but it is not a well researched labour market. For some years the planning needs and developing sophistication of organisations in the industry—trade associations and trade unions, Central Government, the Industry NEDO, the Tourist Boards and the HCITB itself—and the increasing scale of major employers have created significant new demands for information. As these bodies set out to plan for their own development and determine their place within the whole industry, set targets for success and monitor achievements, it becomes increasingly obvious that a flow of manpower information is urgently required.
