Power Problems at the Managerial level
Abstract
There are few ideas as attractive—and also as misleading—as those which have to do with managerial power and authority. As one is introduced to each new job, there is pointed out in both subtle and not‐so‐subtle ways the power that the new occupant will shortly have. The space to be occupied, the furniture, and the prequisites all reflect it. One is shown a job description, is introduced to staff already there, and has pointed out via the organizational chart the lines of authority. One sees not only the new responsibilities to be assumed but also the power and prestige which will ensure their being fulfilled.
