Abstract

The following article discusses the development of a Health Authority Nursing Team and describes briefly the stages of development it went through until finally ending with Quality Circles as a means to improve the quality of patient care and produce an effective, efficient service. Quality Circles, whilst important as a means to achieving organisational goals, also have a number of “spin‐off” effects, namely, developing leadership skills within individuals, and group identities. The effect of these cannot be positively measured, although the effect is felt by everyone within the organisation. Nurses in the North Warwickshire Health Authority are convinced Quality Circles are the only way to achieve the improvements necessary within the National Health Service (NHS) and, as a result, expect to continue the development of Quality Circles in a multi‐disciplinary method.
