Abstract

For 25 years following the Second World War, the western world prospered on cheap energy. The end had to come and it was triggered by the Yom Kippu War of 1973. Ever since, a process of readjustment has been taking place, often with dramatic consequences. For industry and private users, brought up to consider energy as a minor percentage of total outgoings, the world changed in 1973.
