Abstract

It is now widely accepted that where maximum long‐life protective treatment is required for structural steelwork, sprayed zinc or aluminium metal coatings, followed by an occlusive painting system (except in mild rural ambient conditions) are particularly suitable and can reduce considerably maintenance costs. Nevertheless failures do occasionally occur, and it is the purpose of this article to enquire into the causes of these failures and the steps that should be taken by the inspectorate to eliminate them.
