Abstract

Tin bronzes and other related tin‐containing, copper‐base alloys are used in a large number of industrial applications since they possess a combination of desirable properties. These include high mechanical strength, ability to be worked and very good resistance to corrosion and wear. Binary copper‐tin alloys containing between 3 and 8% tin are widely used for such purposes as springs, chemical hardware, pump and valve parts, and nuts and bolts. Increasing the tin content to around 10–12% generally improves the alloy's resistance to wear and corrosion. Gunmetals, which are copper‐tin alloys with additions of small proportions of zinc to make casting easier, are also used for applications such as valves and fittings for water and steam pipelines and in other casting applications needing a non‐ferrous alloy having good resistance to corrosion.
