Tools for Helping Self‐Development: Part 3. On‐the‐job coaching by the tutor

Abstract

The subject matter for this article is on‐the‐job coaching by the tutor/catalyst, as opposed to coaching by the boss. In some ways this is a revolutionary tool in that it is virtually unknown for management teachers to go and sit alongside a manager at his place of work and seek to help directly. And yet a visitor from Mars would not be surprised. He would think, quite naturally, that a management teacher would be a highly experienced manager and would teach management, in the main, where the managing was done. We have come to expect otherwise but I can suggest, with tongue only part in cheek, that a management teacher ought to be capable of teaching managers on‐the‐job, and that ought to be the qualifying test of his competence?
