Abstract

Succession planning and career development are the two sides of a single coin. From a company point of view, there is a need to plan, as systematically as possible, how to replace its managers and other employees as and when they move (out of the company, are promoted or move into support roles). From the individual's point of view, he will be looking at himself and assessing, with differing degrees of realism, his prospects in the company — will he be promoted? Is he holding his own in his current job? Does he want a move in the company but outside his currently assigned task?
