Abstract

It is generally agreed that the corrosion of aluminium or an aluminium‐based alloy is accelerated by electrical contact with copper or iron. Considerable ingenuity has been shown in working out designs which avoid such contacts, notably in ship construction; the subject has received authoritative discussion from Whiteford. Where contact can be avoided, the danger is greatly reduced, and perhaps the main unsatisfactory feature of the present situation is that there are engineers and architects—even today—who apparently do not know that precautions are necessary. The possible dangers arising from proximity, in absence of contact, still deserve consideration and form the main subject of the research described below.
