Building and Maintaining the Community Resources File for I&R Service
Abstract
Library based Information and Referral services are no longer a matter for philosophical debate or speculation. They exist. They work. And they work better than anyone anticipated. Each day, patrons are given direct answers to their questions or referred to a community agency or organization that provides the service or information they seek. Many are calling the library for the first time. Many ask for the I&R desk but state requests that are easily answered with standard reference works. It becomes quickly apparent that an I&R program provides essential service, leads to fuller use of all library services and introduces the nonuser to the library.
