Abstract

Tertiary education, though much discussed by the cognoscenti, is little understood by the vast majority and for good reason; it is an area we do not all experience, still the preserve of a minority. Not so long ago, what lay beyond secondary education was university, but with the gradual development of the so‐called public sector, the emergence of 32 polytechnics has opened up an element of choice. The whole sector has been developed in close consultation with business, commerce, and industry. Many polytechnic students are sponsored by industry, and many more seek their careers in that sector.
