A Novel Air‐Cooled Engine: The New 300 Horse‐power Napier has Four Banks of Cylinders Forming an H

Abstract

IN the article “Tendencies in Engine Design at Olympia” published in AIRCRAFT ENGINEERING, September 1929 (Vol. 1, pp. 247–257), regret was expressed that there was no information available that D. Napier & Son, Limited were following up new ideas. It was admitted that the position of the Lion engine was due, in a large measure, to concentration of the firm's effort on this type; but the danger was pointed out of a manufacturer in these circumstances tending to become somewhat lacking in vision. It was mentioned as somewhat surprising that none of the firm's engines exhibited were fitted with superchargers, nor, so far as could be gathered, was any design work proceeding on an engine of V‐form; for which, it was suggested, there should be an increasing demand in view of this type being more suited for installation in single‐seater fighters than the broad‐arrow type.
