Abstract

This report is an extract from Digest 261 on “Painting Woodwork”, published by the Building Research Establishment, Garston, Watford. It discusses the structure of wood and its effects on the application and durability of paint and preservatives. Notes are included on moisture content and dimensional changes, permeability, effects of sawing, planing and sanding, and external influences, such as water, solar radiation, micro‐organisms and the risk of decay. The original Digest also gives details of typical preservatives and paint systems.
