Abstract

Special purpose coatings in the broadest sense can be defined as all types of coatings other than architectural or building paints and factory‐applied‐production line finishes and includes anti‐corrosion coatings, marine finishes and automobile refinishing materials. The West European market for these materials was estimated at about 635,000 tons valued at $2.5bn in 1985 and it is expected to grow at an average of 4% yearly over the rest of the decade. After this, growth will accelerate to reach around 1.3m tons by the year 2000. These are some of the conclusions reached in the latest multiclient study of the coatings industry issued by Information Research Ltd (262 Regent St, Lodon W1R 5DA. Tel: 01‐434 4536).
