Development of a machine‐readable catalogue at the University of Essex

Abstract

The decision to commence automation activities in the library of the University of Essex with cataloguing was based upon the very real prospect of a new library being able to avoid one of the potential problems of most other libraries. There, the conversion of a mass of existing entries must be completed before any computer‐based cataloguing system can become fully effective. The possession of a comprehensive machine‐readable catalogue record for each book will also simplify the introduction of an automated circulation system when the rapidly growing population of the University makes this necessary.
