Abstract

Unlike earlier technologies that extended physical prowess, the new information technology is an extension of the mind. While books and other recorded materials are forms of external memories, the new technology, which can combine audio, video, and data, and can process and transmit information, is an extension of the thinking power of the human brain. The new technologies will have a profound impact on education. Education and educational institutions are already undergoing change, in part as a result of the new technology, and in part as a result of other forces. Those who advocate new technology and seek to implement it in their institutions, must be mindful of the future agendas of their institutions and must be able to relate their personal objectives to those agendas. Ideas and requests will fare better in the competition for limited institutional resources if they are seen as a compatible and supportive means to an end, rather than as ends in themselves.
