THe Withered Reference Dollar

Abstract

The 1975/76 fiscal year will see further erosion of library material budgets. For some libraries this will accelerate the continuing process of weeding less frequently used materials from subscription budgets and postponement of the acquisition of new editions of certain library tools. Many libraries however, have passed beyond these options and are finding even basic materials in jeopardy. For these, there is no comfort in the blithe statement: “Retrenchment provides an opportunity for a healthy reassessment of collection development policies.” Indeed, for some overworked librarians, there is no time to even contemplate the luxury of a healthy reassessment.
