Abstract

The tree‐lined streets of many American cities are a solid reminder of the role trees have played in our economy and our everyday environment. Much of our early exploration and history was a direct result of the diversity and magnitude of the tree cover in North America. More than 900 species and varieties of trees have been recorded north of the Rio Grande, more than four times the number found in continental Europe.
