Abstract

Far from the centers of the publishing world and without any connections, Leland G. Alkire, Jr. has become a compiler and editor of an important reference work. As a result he won a promotion, has been published in a library journal, is solicited to review reference books, and is now a contributing editor of a major reference source. In solving a problem for his library, he has benefited both his career and library users around the world.
