Abstract

Early post‐war business schools in the major English‐speaking countries were, by present standards, generally “inelegant”, their function being very much directed towards training. They were staffed by people who, whilst often strong on practice, were frequently not particularly well qualified academically. Since then there has been a significant shift towards conceptualisation and theorisation, motivated in no small measure by a desire for “academic elegance”. Staff profiles have consequently also changed. As with most historic swings, may not this one have been excessive? Now may therefore be the right time to question whether this move has not gone too far and if a more balanced approach is not required.
