Abstract

As a result of industrial change it can be predicted that there will be a developing interest in redundancy advisory/counselling schemes; though a few have been initiated, they have been primarily for executives. The description of two projects, in which counselling was used by shop‐floor workers, argues the need for providing such assistance at all levels of the workforce, to make the process less painful and to reduce long‐term bitterness. An interesting development would be the involvement of public sector institutions — colleges, local authority departments — in industry, providing expertise and recruiting and managing teams of counsellors, whether on a long‐term basis, or short‐term to meet emergencies (e.g. major closures).
