Abstract

Steel appeal has given Scunthorpe phenomenal growth, and unparalleled dependence on one industry. The British Steel Corporation, troubled by falling profits and price curbs, is pinning many hopes on a £188 million modernisation scheme. But the resultant labour, cutback, 3,000 fewer jobs within two years, is making Scunthorpe diversify with haste. Chris Phillips reports; pictures by Eric Lockrane.
